Generously provided by

John Ramplin.png

AND RELAX...

We offer a tranquil retreat in the French countryside, free of charge. Designed to provide respite for those in unpaid caring roles, this conveniently located static home is available for carers resident in the Bailiwick of Guernsey with or without those that they care for.

Nestled in lush greenery on the edge of a quiet Lake, the Vieux Châtel Campsite is located 900 meters from the historic centre of the Small City of Combourg, a beautiful historic and green city on the French tourist cycle circuit.

Shops, services and restaurants are accessible by a picturesque path along the lake, where the castle stands. Ideally located between Saint-Malo, Dinan, Rennes and Mont Saint Michel, Combourg is at the heart of your discoveries and the haven of your relaxation.

The Accommodation

The Willerby Richmond is a very spacious caravan designed with extra space in mind, with wide hallways, sliding internal doors, a generous bathroom with a walk in shower/wet room style and a large bedroom (twin beds) with built in wardrobes plus double doors to a second generous twin room.

Who can use it?

Carers are welcome to use the accommodation, free of charge, for one week per year on a first come, first served basis.

Carers must be registered users of a Guernsey or Alderney charitable service, acting in a caring capacity.  If the carer has been referred by another local charity, Carers Guernsey will make basic checks with that charity to ensure the service is used for legitimate purposes.

What will we need to bring?

You will need to bring bed linen and towels with you. There are 4 single beds in the property and pillows and blankets are provided. The property is self catering so you will need to bring your own food and beverages.  During the summer months the weather can be very warm so please ensure you are adequately equipped for such weather.  Guests should leave the property in a clean and tidy condition upon their departure.

The Campsite

The campsite is well maintained with a number of communal facilities including free parking, a self service launderette and a small grocery shop.  On site are a children’s playground, a boules pitch and a games room, and you can enjoy the nearby municipal swimming pool and tennis courts at preferential rates.

The Area

Combourg is just 1km from this haven of tranquillity via the literature trail that crosses the reed bed of Lac Tranquille, so dear to Chateaubriand, before arriving at the château and the medieval houses of the old town. If it takes your fancy, try one of the 7 cycle trails that enable you to explore the patchwork of fields and woodland of this peaceful welcoming rural area.

How to get here

The campsite is within easy reach of St Malo port and Rennes airport.

For ferries to St Malo or Cherbourg please visit: https://www.condorferries.co.uk/

Occasionally, usually in the summer months, there are also flights to Rennes with Blue Islands, which is a 30 minute journey to the campsite.  Carers would need to arrange their own private transfer from the airport.  Visit Blue Islands to search flights.  https://www.blueislands.com/

Whilst there is no charge for accommodation, all travel is at the expense of the travelling party.  All travel must be organised independently and we regret that we are unable to assist with travel bookings.  However if the cost of travel is prohibitive, we may be able to provide ad hoc financial assistance, if requested.   This should be requested at the time of booking.

As return travel plans can be subject to delays or changes due to weather or other disruptions, we STRONGLY RECOMMEND that independent travel insurance is taken out by the carer for the entire party.  Neither Carers Guernsey or the Trustees of the John Ramplin Charitable Trust take any responsibility for or are able to assist in the event of any travel disruption

The campsite address is:
